Traditional Rock Climbing Course

The Traditional Rock Climbing Course is designed for climbers who want to step into mountain terrain and learn how to climb unbolted, multi-pitch routes with safety and autonomy. Throughout the course, participants will acquire the technical skills and judgment required to tackle this type of climbing as lead climbers, managing both progression and protection on the wall.

The training combines theoretical and practical content, covering everything from the correct use of specific equipment and the placement of removable protection, to the construction of belay anchors using fixed, mobile, and improvised protection, belaying techniques, and rope progression systems. The course also addresses key aspects such as basic aid climbing, logistics for multi-pitch routes, risk management, and sound decision-making in changing mountain environments.

This course is intended for climbers with previous experience in sport climbing who comfortably climb routes graded V+, and who already have basic knowledge of rappelling and anchor building. It is ideal for those looking to broaden their skills and move toward a more technical, committed, and adventurous style of climbing, always with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and respect for the natural environment.

Course Content

Throughout the course, participants will work on a theoretical–practical basis on the knowledge and techniques required for traditional multi-pitch climbing, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and decision-making in a mountain environment.

The course will cover the correct use of specific equipment and gear, including harnesses, ropes, auxiliary cords and slings, belay devices, locking carabiners, personal anchor systems, and climbing shoes.

A key component of the course is the placement of removable protection, learning how to correctly place and evaluate passive protection, active protection, and camming devices with rotational placement, as well as how to assess the quality and reliability of each piece.

The course includes a comprehensive section on essential climbing knots, including:

  • Tie-in knots (double figure-eight).
  • Anchor and attachment knots (girth hitch and clove hitch).
  • Joining knots (bowline, fisherman’s knot, rewoven figure-eight with opposed and parallel strands, and overhand knot).
  • Friction and self-locking knots (prusik, single-loop and double-loop Machard).
  • Belay and braking knots (Italian hitch).

Participants will learn how to build belay anchors using fixed protection, removable protection, and improvised anchors, covering the physics of anchor systems, safety requirements, and anchor construction on both horizontal and vertical placements.

The course also addresses belaying techniques for both the leader and the second, using dynamic belay devices and improvised systems when necessary.

Progression techniques and removable protection placement will be practiced while climbing with single, half, and twin rope systems, including proper rope management on multi-pitch routes.

Another key topic is the logistics of equipped multi-pitch routes, covering the interpretation of guidebooks and topos, time management and scheduling, and weather assessment.

Finally, the course will cover essential safety equipment (first-aid kit, mobile phone, water, food, etc.) and risk management, analyzing the most common accidents and emergency response protocols (PAS).
