Self-Rescue in Rock Climbing Course
The Self-Rescue in Rock Climbing Course is designed for climbers who want to enjoy climbing with a greater sense of safety and confidence, both as the lead climber and as the belayer. Through a theoretical–practical approach, participants will learn how to manage unexpected situations and effectively resolve incidents that may arise during a climbing activity.
Throughout the course, participants will work on the main self-rescue techniques, the correct use of specific equipment, essential knots, ascending and descending a fixed rope, raising and lowering a partner, load transfers, and basic evacuation procedures. The aim is to provide climbers with the knowledge and skills needed to act calmly, efficiently, and safely in emergency situations while climbing.

Course Content and Objectives
Throughout the course, participants will work on a theoretical–practical basis on the fundamental knowledge and techniques of self-rescue in rock climbing, with the aim of providing autonomy, sound judgment, and safety when dealing with potential emergency situations.
The course will cover in detail the use of specific equipment and gear, including helmets, harnesses, dynamic ropes, auxiliary cords, different types of belay devices, carabiners, fixed and removable anchors, etriers, pulleys, and micro rope clamps.
A key component of the course is the learning and refinement of essential climbing knots, including:
- Tie-in knots (figure eight, double figure eight on a bight, figure nine, and clove hitch).
- Friction and self-locking knots (prusik, single-loop Machard, double-loop Machard, double-loop Machard with two carabiners, and Bachmann knot).
- Special-purpose knots (Italian hitch, Remy knot, and heart knot).
- Joining knots (double fisherman’s knot, rewoven figure eight, and simple bowline).
- Escape knots (Munter mule and mariner hitch).
Participants will also practice fixed-rope progression techniques, both ascending and descending, through the correct placement and use of ascenders, micro rope clamps, belay devices, and knots. The use of improvised equipment will also be addressed, including techniques for descending on a tensioned rope and ascending or descending while passing knots.
The course includes specific exercises on load transfer techniques, such as passing a knot through a belay device, as well as partner ascent and descent maneuvers, using hauling systems, counterbalance techniques, rappelling with a releasable anchor, and methods for rappelling with an injured partner.
Finally, the course will address complex and emergency scenarios, such as lowering off on damaged ropes or questionable anchors, along with rescue and evacuation procedures, covering proper response protocols and effective methods for calling for assistance.
