The Montes Carpetanos mountain range, which closes the Lozoya Valley on its northern slope, is one of the most important in the Sierra de Guadarrama and is home to the Pico del Nevero massif (2,209 m), the third highest after Peñalara and Cabezas de Hierro.
El Nevero is one of the most iconic mountains in the Sierra de Madrid, from whose summit we can admire impressive views of the Lozoya River Valley, Peñalara, and Cuerda Larga. Without a doubt, one of the best hiking routes in Madrid.

Our route begins in the village of Pinilla del Valle. The initial section will ascend through deep green meadows, then through leafless oak groves that still allow us to see the mountain peaks.
We will then continue through a beautiful Scots pine forest to reach a hill that, amidst heathland and gorse, brings us closer to the summit, which is reached by climbing a final stretch of rock and creeping juniper.
As we reach the summit, and true to its name, we must cross a large snowfield. From there, we will take the ridge to the Navafria Pass (the only pass that directly connects the Lozoya Valley with the province of Segovia). The pine forests that extend around the town of Navafría constitute an exceptional setting.
Thousands of hectares of forests lovingly cared for by its inhabitants are visible. Thanks to the wise management of these forests, today we can enjoy one of the largest stands of Scots pine in all of Europe. We will descend through this pine forest to the town of Lozoya, reaching the end of our route.
