Discover the dazzling Peñalara trails by trekking in Madrid.
Mount Peñalara is located on the summit and slopes of the highest mountain range that makes up the Guadarrama mountain range. To the north, it extends to the summit of the Dos Hermanas, whose highest peaks are the Claveles and Pájaros peaks.
On the southern slope of Peñalara Peak is Laguna Grande, of glacial origin and the result of the erosion of large ice sheets. At the foot of the Pájaros peak is another lagoon of the same origin. There are also three glacial cirques: Laguna Grande, Pepe Hernando, and the Pedriza and Brezal glaciers, as well as several moraines.

We'll begin our hike from Puerto de los Cotos. We'll take the trail that leads to Mirador de la Gitana, from where we can enjoy unique views of Cuerda Larga. We'll take the path that will take us through the pine forest for the first few meters and then run out of the pine forest and halfway up the slope to the bridge over the Peñalara stream.
The Peñalara Circus appears spectacularly in front of us, and to its left, we can see the Zabala Refuge. From here, the climb gains a little more elevation. We'll skirt the lagoon on our right and climb up the cirque's central channel to Dos Hermanas. We'll continue the route straight ahead toward Risco de los Claveles, "El Paso de los Claveles." We'll enter the pass with its impressive views. After crossing it, we'll continue along the ridge until we reach the summit of Peñalara (2,428 m).
We will descend following the divide until we reach the forest track that will lead us to the parking lot.
